Why I Started This Site

In 2023, I turned 52 and my sleep completely fell apart.

I'd been managing lower back pain for years — the kind that makes you dread mornings no matter how early you turn in. Then perimenopause arrived, bringing 3am anxiety spirals, hot flashes that soaked through anything, and a bone-deep exhaustion I couldn't shift no matter how many hours I spent in bed.

I started researching sleep supplements obsessively. And I quickly noticed a problem: most review sites are written by people who have never actually slept badly. Generic supplement lists with no mention of menopause, hormones, or what it actually feels like to be a woman over 50 who can't sleep.

So I started digging in properly — reading the clinical research behind the ingredients, comparing formulas line by line, tracking down verified owner reviews, and cutting through the marketing language every brand uses. Sleep Better After 50 is the result.

Who I Am

My name is Carol Mitchell. I'm 53, based in the United States, and I work as a freelance health writer. I have a chronic L4-L5 disc issue that makes back-friendly, restful sleep genuinely important (not just a preference), and I've been navigating perimenopause since late 2022.

Since mid-2025 the site has focused on products available to US buyers, which is where most of the formulas covered here actually ship from. I'm not a doctor, nutritionist, or sleep scientist. What I am is a real woman who reads the research most people don't have time for, and turns it into honest, plain-language recommendations — including when a product doesn't hold up.

How I Research Products

Every product on this site is evaluated through the same research-based process — aggregated ingredient research, manufacturer disclosures, published clinical studies, and verified owner/user feedback compiled from multiple independent sources. I don't publish reviews based on press releases or manufacturer marketing copy alone, and every claim I can source, I link to.

My Commitment to Honest Reviews

I have affiliate partnerships with Digistore24, Commission Factory, Awin, and MaxWeb. When you buy through my links, I earn a commission. This is how the site is funded.

However: I have given negative ratings to products I am affiliated with, and I have declined to promote products that didn't meet my standards after research. My ratings are based on the evidence and aggregated feedback, not on which product pays the highest commission.

I update reviews when products change their formula, shipping, or pricing. Every page shows its last-updated date.
