Why I Started This Site
In 2023, I turned 52 and my sleep completely fell apart.
I'd been managing lower back pain for years — the kind that makes you dread mornings and rotate through mattresses hoping each one will fix it. Then perimenopause arrived, bringing 3am anxiety spirals, hot flushes that soaked through anything, and a bone-deep exhaustion I couldn't shift no matter how many hours I spent in bed.
I started researching mattresses and sleep supplements obsessively. And I quickly noticed a problem: most review sites are written by people who have never actually slept badly. Young men reviewing mattresses for "athletes." Generic supplement lists with no mention of menopause, hormones, or what it actually feels like to be a woman over 50 who can't sleep.
So I started testing things myself — rigorously, over weeks — and writing down exactly what happened. Sleep Better After 50 is the result.
Who I Am
My name is Carol Mitchell. I'm 53, I live on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, and I work as a freelance health writer. I have a chronic L4-L5 disc issue that makes mattress firmness genuinely important (not just a preference), and I've been navigating perimenopause since late 2022.
I'm not a doctor, nutritionist, or sleep scientist. What I am is a real woman who has spent real money testing real products and tracking the results honestly — including when they don't work.
How I Test Products
All products on this site have been personally tested by me for a minimum of 4 weeks (mattresses 8 weeks). I never review from press releases, manufacturer specs, or secondhand reports. If I haven't slept on it or taken it, I don't rate it.
For Mattresses
- Minimum 8-week test period — shorter than that and you haven't broken in the mattress or adjusted your sleep position
- I track morning back pain on a 1–5 scale daily for the first 4 weeks
- I note hot flush frequency and whether the mattress made them better or worse
- I assess motion transfer (important if you share a bed), edge support, and getting in/out of bed with back pain
- I contact customer service at least once to test response quality
For Sleep Supplements
- Minimum 6-week test period — most adaptogens and sleep aids need 3–4 weeks to show consistent effects
- I keep a sleep journal tracking: time to fall asleep, number of wake-ups, quality rating on waking, morning energy
- I research the active ingredients against published studies (I link to these in my reviews)
- I check for known interactions with common menopause medications (HRT, antidepressants)
- I verify shipping to Australia and test actual delivery times
My Rating Criteria
My Commitment to Honest Reviews
I have affiliate partnerships with Digistore24, Commission Factory, and Awin. When you buy through my links, I earn a commission. This is how the site is funded.
However: I have given negative ratings to products I am affiliated with, and I have declined to promote products that didn't meet my standards after testing. My ratings are based on my actual experience, not on which product pays the highest commission.
I update reviews when products change their formula, shipping, or pricing. Every page shows its last-updated date.
