How We Review Products

Our methodology, criteria, and commitment to honest testing — last updated June 2025

Core principle: Every product reviewed on this site has been personally tested by Carol Mitchell for a minimum of 4 weeks. We never publish reviews based on press kits, manufacturer claims, or secondhand reports. Affiliate relationships do not influence ratings.

Our Review Process

1

Product Selection

We identify products based on reader requests, market research, and products Carol personally wants to test. We prioritise products that ship to Australia.

2

Purchase or Sample

Most products are purchased by Carol at full price. Occasionally we receive samples — these are disclosed in the review, and receive identical evaluation criteria.

3

Structured Testing

Every product follows a structured test protocol (described below). Results are logged daily. No shortcuts — minimum test periods are enforced.

4

Research & Sources

Active ingredients are researched against published studies. We link to primary sources (PubMed, TGA, peer-reviewed journals) where relevant.

5

Rating & Writing

Carol rates each product on defined criteria (detailed below), writes the review in first person, and includes what didn't work alongside what did.

6

Review Updates

Reviews are updated when formulas change, products are discontinued, pricing shifts significantly, or new evidence emerges. Update dates are visible on every page.

Sleep Supplement Review Criteria

Minimum test period: 6 weeks. Most sleep supplements and adaptogens require 3–4 weeks of consistent use before producing measurable effects. Shorter tests produce unreliable results.

Editorial Independence

Sleep Better After 50 participates in affiliate programmes including Digistore24, Commission Factory, and Awin. When you purchase through our links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Our affiliate relationships do not influence ratings. We have published reviews with ratings below 4.0 for products where we have affiliate arrangements, and we have declined to promote products that didn't meet our standards after testing.

Products are never ranked higher because they pay higher commissions. Our primary obligation is to the women reading this site who are trying to sleep better — not to any brand.
